First of all, thank you for agreeing to participate in this challenge and write a story for me! The holidays are often stressful and Yuletide has become my happy place in all of that. Yuletide stories recapture some of that old Christmas magic for me and make me feel like a kid all over again, eager to tear open that mysterious present under the tree. So, from the bottom of my heart, thank you in advance for being my writer.

Please take all my optional suggestions and fannish blatherings as just that...suggestions. If there's a story idea you have for these characters that you like better, go for it! I’m comfortable with any rating. Follow your muse and I know you'll write a great story! If you'd like to see the type of stories I write and like, please feel free to check out my work on
AO3 . I’ve been spending a bit more time on tumblr lately where I reblog too many pictures of Gillian Anderson these days. Very little of my journal is flocked, so feel free to explore my entries here as well.

General Likes: Humor, bittersweet emotions, missing scenes,“five things” fic, backstory and first meetings, canon divergent AUs, competence, relationships where both partners learn from each other

Dislikes: I don't particularly like stories that involve non-con or death of a major character- if character dies in canon, that's fine. I'm not very fond of tropey (coffeeshop, high school, in space, supernatural) AUs for these canons.

On Porn: As someone who has written everything from G-rated fluff to explicit BDSM, I'm pretty easygoing about sexual content. I don't think things need to be sexually explicit in order to be sexy. But I don't object to smut, either, if that is something you want to include.

Bulletproof kinks: sex toys, femdom (both F/m and F/f), exhibitionism, bondage
Anti-kinks: female submission (M/f), anal, watersports, ageplay, a/b/o. But anything else is fair game!

This year I received a fic and a Madness story and I wrote a fic and a Madness story. Parallelism!

I received The Case of the Sunken Safe, a lovingly crafted Mathnet casefic as my main gift. I was also gifted Island, a Stella-centric drabble from The Fall. The drabble is really just so perfectly Stella. Please check them out and give them lots of kudos and comments!

I wrote Ouroboros as my main gift, which is based on the Wise Child Series by Monica Furlong, one of my favorite childhood book series. It’s a series I definitely recommend if you like YA, historical fantasy, and/or female mentor-apprentice stories.

I also wrote Love a Girl in Uniform as a treat. It is shameless Stella/Dani porn for the The Fall. Je ne regrette rien, yo.

[personal profile] silverflight8 asked me to talk about favorite childhood books.

First of all, thank you for agreeing to participate in this challenge and write a story for me! I am a seasoned Yuletider and it is definitely the highlight of my fannish calendar every year. The holidays are often a stressful time loaded with unpleasant family drama (as I'm sure they are for many) and Yuletide has become my happy place in all of that. So, from the bottom of my heart, thank you in advance for being my writer.

Yay, reveals time! I wrote 3 fics this year- my assignment, a full length treat, and a Madness ficlet. Lots of firsts for me this Yuletide: I wrote in two fandoms I'd never written in before, one of which was its first story in the archive. I wrote boyslash! I wrote an AU! I wrote a story in present tense for reasons I don't understand other than it felt right at the time. *shrugs*

Reveals )

I also decided to do the fandom snowflake challenge this year. In the spirit of the friending meme and posting more stuff, I will do fifteen days of posting about fandom and fannish things. I have some travels coming up, so some of these posts might get delayed a few days.

It's been fun browsing the Yuletide collection while snowbound at my parents house this week. First, I'd like to put in a plug for my 4 (4!) gift fics in Greek & Roman Mythology. They are all retellings of the Orpheus & Eurydice myth and they kick ass. You can read about them in this post.

Recs in Kushiel's Legacy, Downton Abbey, Breaking Bad, Mad Men, Project Runway-RPF, Les Adieux a la Reine, The Thin Man )

Or, in other words, how I through no fault of my own, won Yuletide this year, with FOUR (count 'em FOUR) fics. Somebody up there must like me, which is nice, because I've had a rough past month or so. Though, who hasn't really- I'm not worthy of such splendor O' Gods of Yuletide!

Anyway, my prompt of reworking the Orpheus descending myth proved quite attractive to people- I received a yuletide fic and three additional treats for it and they are all fantastic. I am seriously impressed by how well executed and very different they all are. It's basically choose your flavor of awesome:

1) Would you like to read a genderswappy retelling of Orpheus and Eurydice where they meet as lovers time and again Cloud Atlas style? Of course you would! Then try Grasping at Shadows .Bonus for being told from Eurydice's point of view and having some Eurydice/Persephone going on.

2) How about a 10,000+ word epic retold from Eurydice's perspective set in the Jazz Age criminal underworld? Bootleggers and flappers and some seriously amazingly crafted prose. Let me direct you to Snakebit

3) Or perhaps a Delta Blues style retelling with some Vouou influences thrown in is more your style? Try Last Nickel in the Nation Sack, based on the real life experiences of Blues musician Robert Johnson, rumored to have once sold his soul to the Devil in return for his success. This one comes complete with its own soundtrack!

4) Finally, maybe these historical retellings aren't really your thing and you want to read something more modern, edgy and now. Something fresh and relevant to our present moment. go down to the netherworld (plant grapes) is just that story, told from the perspective of a goth!Persephone.

Check them out friends, because every single one of them is a winner and they all deserve more hits and comments. I feel like I didn't just get a story, somebody wrote me an effing anthology this year! Writers, if you are reading this, know that you have made me one happy girl. Wishing you all the best wherever you are. I have family things to do the rest of today, but you can expect more recs in other fandoms from me soon. Additionally, I wrote 3 stories- 2 full length (assignment and treat) and 1 madness. 2/3 have left me lovely comments so far and I have received generous comments from non-recips, too. So, yay!

Dear Yuletide Writer,

First of all, let me thank you for agreeing to participate in this challenge and write a story for me! Last year was my first Yuletide and I had such a wonderful time that I am now back for more! The holidays are often a very hard time for me and it cheered me up so much last year to have a wonderful story written just for me- it definitely took the edge off all the unpleasant family holiday drama.  Please take all my optional suggestions and fannish blatherings as just that...suggestions. I’m comfortable with any rating. I'd like to think I'm "easy like Sunday morning," when it comes to fic challenges. I'm happy to throw out plotbunnies, but at the end of the day, I want to read a fic that you enjoyed writing.  Follow your muse and I know you'll write a great story! If you'd like to see the type of stories I write and like, please feel free to check out my work on AO3 or at fanfiction.net where I write as green lion. Very little of my lj is flocked, so feel free to explore my entries here as well.

I just turned in a very unfinished chapter draft to my adviser today, which brings the total up to 4/5 chapters drafted. *insert Liz Lemon self-high five here* I'm still hoping to have it all drafted by Christmas, though unfortunately what I turned in today is very much a work in process. I'm workshopping it back at Big Blue next month and it still has a ways to go before I'm willing to let my colleagues get their hands on it. But at least I have a deadline. Must channel my inner Mandrake adept and whip that chapter into shape! Though most of the time, I really  feel like it's the other way around. I'm pretty sure they keep a copy of the Chicago Manual of Style in the flagellery of House Shahrizai....

In other blah blah academia news, there has been quite of bit of mean girls frenemy type behavior in my department in the past few weeks which has me giving certain folks the side-eye. I get that we are all squabbling over limited resources, but..*facepalm* I also had some health issues a few weeks ago. It's nothing too serious, but I will need to see a specialist and might need to make some changes to my diet. I also have a feeling it's probably related to all this job market/dissertation stress.

I promised myself that now that this draft is turned in, I can put together my Yuletide request. Squee! It's gonna be gangbusters. Also hoping to complete my assignment for [livejournal.com profile] kink_roulette by the end of the month. I have a great idea and a half-written story and apparently nothing helps me relax more than writing the pornographies these days. Perhaps that is what I shall do after I address the other things I have neglected in the past few weeks...like getting an oil change and going to the grocery store. Also V and I have started watching Warehouse 13- we're still on season 1 but we really like it! Which is good, because sometimes our tv tasted don't overlap. She's very picky about genre stuff (tolerates my love of Doctor Who, but really got hooked on BSG) I've tried to persuade her that there will be femslashy subtext if we can make it to season 2.

Recs Ahoy!

Not that I have an overabundance of lj friends, but here's a random list of recs. Yuletide has truly been a banquet and it's a pleasure to read so many fics from fandoms I love and from fandoms I never imagined even would have fic.

There were so many excellent Kushiel's Legacy fics this year and several featuring fiction's most amazing villainess, Melisande Sharizhai. In addition to my own a-mazing gift fic- here are some others:

A Pain That I'm Used ToAn unsent letter from Melisande to Joscelin that is just so so perfectly Melisande. Merveilleux.

The Goddess Rendered Mortal Mavros, Melisande and Leander Maignard on the island of Cythera post- Kushiel's Mercy.

ReparationsAn episode from Joscelin's harsh childhood within the Cassiline Brotherhood. With unexpected Anafiel Delaunay! This fic really captured my imagination and I say that as someone who is not a big Joscelin person.

There were also two a-mazing Where on Earth is Carmen Sandiego fics written this year, both tackling what I have always found to be a thorny part of the series for a writer, namely the issue of the Player, and the world within a world the series seems to create. There can ever be enough good Carmen fic, IMO, and both of these are excellent.

Player Status: Offline- A look into the lives of the characters when the game is not in motion. I really loved the series of vignettes. And all of the characters, especially Carmen, were at their mischievous best.

Lead Me On A Merry Chase-  This fic is epic in a good way. The author has really done something brilliant here- a fully fleshed out backstory for the Player and a truly ingenious take on the series. Amy/The Player is so very well-rendered and real and one of the best original characters I've ever read. In many ways, this is sort of an "inside-out" version of the Carmenverse, as it takes place more in our world than in Carmen's. But that is precisely what makes it unique and worth reading.

Other Fandoms )

kmo: (Default)
Hello, dear writer, and thank you in advance for signing up to write in one of my fandoms for Yuletide! I'm sure you notice that my LJ is pretty sad....I actually am not a big LJ user. And though I am a longtime observer of Yuletide, this is my first ever time as a participant. So please forgive me if I make any newbie request mistakes. If you'd like to see the type of stories I write and like, please feel free to check out my work on AO3 or at fanfiction.net where I write as green lion.

As you'll notice from my requests and likes, I tend to have a thing for sympathetic villains and anti-heroes. I'm a big fan of foe-yay and sexual tension between protagonists and their antagonists. I also love strong, intelligent female characters and stories that feature relationships between women as the primary focus, even if they are not explicitly femslashy. I am comfortable with any rating. And please feel free to treat my ideas and suggestions as jumping off points rather than strict commandments. Follow your muse and I know you'll write a great story!

General Likes: Humor, UST, bittersweet emotions, character studies, passing the Bechdel Test, Porn With Plot

Dislikes: I'm not huge into stories that are happy-fluffy to the point where they are unbelievable with canon. I also don't particularly like stories that involve rape or death of a major character- unless it is making reference to canon events. I hope that doesn't seem too contradictory.
