i think the show definitely wants to sandwich in romance, even if it doesn't necessarily belong there. (see Talisa) and the thing is...these are just not conventionally romantic novels. i think Jaime & Brienne are the most romantic pairing in the series...and they aren't even officially together as of book 5.
