oh so jealous you are close to NOLA, it is such an awesome city and I feel like I barely scratched the surface while i was there. we did go to a really great restaurant in the French Quarter called The Gumbo Shop (bit on the pricey side) and the food there was the best of any place we went to. And well, cafe au lait and beignets at Cafe du Monde if you haven't had that experience yet. I could dine on that forever!
I feel like I saw this somewhere your journal- are you in MS? Coincidentally one of my BFFs from grad school just moved to Hattiesburg, MS to start working at Southern Miss.
