So hi new people from the friending meme! Thanks for subscribing to me. I'm still working out the kinks on dreamwidth (and feeling a bit like the Dowager Countess trying to use a telephone) so bear with me. I'll still be posting to LJ, too, and you should feel free to comment wherever you like. I promise to do an "about me" type meme for folks, soon. But for now, let's have fun with this TV Meme I picked up from [personal profile] likeadeuce

Shows you started watching in 2012

Boardwalk Empire and The Hour are the ones that I got the strongest fannish feels about. (still finishing s2 of The Hour- tho' I have been tumblr spoiled for many of the major plot developments...) I had put off watching them for awhile because I was afraid I would be disappointed. On the surface BE seemed like a "Sopranos set in the 1920s" and The Hour as "British Mad Men" but they really are so much more than those descriptors. And even when the plot is clunky and there is an overabundance of female nudity for no particular reason (looking at you, HBOOB), I still enjoy the characters. And I am easy for gorgeous period dress.

We also watched the revamped Upstairs Downstairs and Call the Midwife. They were short and fun. Looking forward to season 2 of Call the Midwife whenever it airs and was saddened that U/D didn't get renewed, just as I was starting to actually care about the characters.

Shows you let go of in 2012

I think the primary one here is Glee. I missed a few episodes. It just got outrageous. Quinn pulled a s2 Matthew from Downton Abbey, I guess? I don't even know what the plot is anymore, if it even had a plot to begin with. I'm also less into Dexter. That show's been on waaay too long. I'm sure I'll catch up on the newest season at some point.

Shows you meant to get into but didn't in 2012

I watched the first season of Avatar and I really liked it but I just kind of lost momentum on it. And I really want to like it because there seems to be such a huge fannish presence for it and Korra. Also amazing female characters. But it's hard to find time to watch a long series when my partner isn't into it, I've found. Same with Revenge. I liked the first few episodes, and holla, is Victoria pulled out of my id or what? (Oh ABC and your talent for creating unintentional femslash.) I really want to try to catch up in 2013.

Shows you intend on checking out in 2013

Homeland is very high up on my must-watch list. I just need to get it from the library. Not willing to buy a show unless I know I'm into it. I've also been meaning to check out American Horror Story, though I am sure it will probably scare the crap out of me. I dunno what else- maybe Elementary? I'm looking for a new series if folks have suggestions.

Show that impressed you least in 2012

The Good Wife is kind of on my shit list right now for its ridiculous Kalinda-hubby plotline. Ugh, like they were trying to make it all edgy and "fifty shades of gray"-esque but it just came off as creepy and abusive and totally demeaning to Kalinda's character. I seriously hate this trope of taking a strong woman and then introducing some kind of domestic abuse backstory in to "humanize" her. Downton Abbey s3....well, it was a mixed bag for me. I complained that s2 was too off the rails in terms of plot contrivances, but s3 might have overrcorrected into boring territory. Fellows is no Matt Weiner or Vince Gilligan in terms of delivering well-plotted story arcs.  I still love the show, though.

If i can put in a plug for most improved, it's Game of Thrones. s1 felt like a rehash of the book, but s2 felt more original and more like a synthesis. Even if I will never forgive them for cutting Jaqen's bath scene...

Show I enjoyed most in 2012

Breaking Bad was probably the most solid and oh how I am dying for the final episodes! It's a show that on the surface I thought I would never get into, as it's very depressing and male-oriented. But the storytelling is so original- and like The Wire, there's never a wasted moment. Mad Men didn't have its best season maybe, but still delighted me. I really loved Peggy's storyline and surprisingly liked Megan a lot, too. And I totally love The Hour because LIX STORM, people! She is the most amazing lady ever, full stop.

And yes, Downton, despite all of its faults, entertains me to no end. Even if it means I spend most of the rewatches making snarky remarks at the tv.

Downton is a really great show to watch communally. And I'm encouraged by your endorsement for GoT season 2. I've heard really mixed things, but a lot of the negativity is from book fans and I can't tell how much of that is THEY CHANGED STUFF! (There is changed stuff in season 1 that bugged me but that's mostly due to being incompatible with my Unified Theory of Jaime Lannister rather than actually being a storytelling choice; well, that and the narrative devise of 'exposition delivered to a prostitute,' but that is a criticism delivered by approximately everybody).

Also, everybody is going to tell you this, but AtLA does take a quantum leap from season 1 to the later seasons -- and a lot of it has to do with introducing new female characters.

I've described Azula and Zuko as being like Cersei and Jaime, if Cersei was the smart one.

This is exactly how I feel about Breaking Bad. I kind of wasn't that interested for a long time because it's soooo male-oriented, but it's a really well-done show. I can't wait for the last eps either, which isn't necessarily how I expected to feel when I started the show!

I should do this meme, but hmm, I can barely remember...

Avatar picks up after the first season, if that helps! But there are still a lot of episodes.
