Well, I got some disappointing news today- found out I am not a finalist for my dream post-doc. It would have been two years of a super sweet deal attached to this institute at a fancy pants university in the NE. I'm trying to remain zen about it all- these things are a crapshoot like anything else in academia, and hey, at least I have some interviews lined up. But, I'm still a bit bummed not to have made the first cut, 'cause dammit my project, it is made of awesome.

So, in light of dispiriting events, both national and personal, I thought it might be fun to do a MEME! Because memes and fandom make everything better.
  • Post a list of 20 fave tv shows, past and present.
  • Have your friends guess your favorite character from each show.
  • When someone guesses your favorite character, bold the title and give one reason why you like that character.
1) Doctor Who: Donna Noble- Donna is definitely a character that I really grew to love over time. In her first appearance during Runaway Bride, I was like "who is this woman and why is she always slapping the Doctor and yelling at him?" By the end of s4, I was all "Yes! moar slapping plz, Donna!" I adore that though she admired the Doctor, she wasn't afraid to stand up to him or make fun of him. Especially after St. Rose and Martha's pining away (you deserved *so* much better Martha Jones!) it was a welcome change. And I ship them, despite the show telling me not to, i am all "lalala whatever show, i ship what i want!" I hate Donna's ending- not only the memory wipe, but the fact the RTD thought it could be fixed with a lottery ticket. I keep hoping that 11 regenerates into Catherine Tate.

2) Lost

3) The Wire

4) The Sopranos

5) Deadwood

6) Mad Men

7) Dexter

8) The Hour

9) The West Wing: CJ Cregg. CJ was the best! Snarky, authoritative, not afraid to go to the mat for the things she believed in. I love how she wasn't afraid to throw elbows in the boy's club (and yes, despite a few exceptions, TWW always felt like a boys' club to me) She never took any shit from Josh & co. Probably a lot of my love for CJ has to do with my love for Allison Janney, who i would watch in anything, even the bad things like the Lost finale or when she is just voicing an animated character in Finding Nemo. I never really cared for the CJ/Danny storyline...I liked her better with her secret service boyfriend who was tragically killed and then went to NCIS. I do enjoy the femslashy fics where she is shipped with Carol or Abby.

10) Nurse Jackie: Eleanor O'Hara- oh i am in looove with O'Hara and the actress that plays her. the way she kind of swans about the hospital, her gorgeous posh accent, her lesbian affair with a Chrisiane Amanpour-type journalist. I'm a sucker for confident, competent women. Her friendship with Jackie just kills me. And I love all her cute sorta femslashy moments with Zoe, too!

11) Absolutely Fabulous

12) 30 Rock

13) Parks and Rec

14) Downton Abbey

15) Breaking Bad: Gus Fring- what a badass, i have no words. if my one type is take no prisoners women, my other fannish type is definitely Machiavellian genius. I admit it, I rooted for Gus against Walt. I still do. And I'm hoping we get more of his backstory in the last few episodes.
16) Battlestar Galactica: Laura Roslin- President Roslin, how I  love thee, let me count the ways. 1) for being an awesome badass older lady who isn't afraid to grab political power. 2) for being complicated- Laura made some tough and sometimes unsympathetic calls. But i honestly believe she did the things she felt were necessary even if they weren't always moral 3) as a scholar of religion, those visions and prophecies she kept having were really the icing on the cake. and 4) for being incredibly sexy and unashamed of her sexuality. She's probably my favorite fictional president of all time. I would vote for her tomorrow- Laura Roslin/Elizabeth Warren 2016!

17) Star Trek: Voyager

18) The Golden Girls: Dorothy Zbornak- even as a kid, Dorothy was always my favorite and continues to be the Golden Girl I most identify with. tall, dark and snarky- that's how I like my women. we miss you Bea Arthur! Here is the most queertastic clip ever, Bea Arthur and Rock Hudson sing a cheerful 70s ditty about drugs.

19) Frasier: Niles Crane- I actually never really watched this show all that much when it was on the air. But the fact that I'm addicted to its re-runs shows how well it stands the test of time as one of the best comedies ever. Frasier was always too much of a blowhard for me, but Niles never fails to crack me up with his limp wristed, effete opera loving shtick. (i do love Roz and Martin and Eddie a lot, too)

20) Boardwalk Empire

I'm betting some of these can be guessed just by nosing around my journal a little

Oh, this is fascinating! And since we've just gotten fannishly acquainted I genuinely don't know but I'll try a few:

Doctor Who: River Song
West Wing: Abby Bartlett
BSG: Laura Roslin

(I have taken a stab at a pattern that may or may not prove correct!)

Hmm, totally new here, so mostly these are stabs in the dark! But:

The Wire: Kima?
Nurse Jackie: O'Hara
Parks and Rec: Ann
Breaking Bad: Hmm....Jesse. No, Hank. No, Jesse. (Unless it's Gus). I'll stick with Jesse. :)
Golden Girls: stab in the dark...Dorothy
