Yuletide Reveals & Fandom Snowflake

kmoYay, reveals time! I wrote 3 fics this year- my assignment, a full length treat, and a Madness ficlet. Lots of firsts for me this Yuletide: I wrote in two fandoms I'd never written in before, one of which was its first story in the archive. I wrote boyslash! I wrote an AU! I wrote a story in present tense for reasons I don't understand other than it felt right at the time. *shrugs*
No Reason Why They Can't Be Friends (3688 words)
Rating: Mature
Relationships: Jud/Curly, Curly/Laurey
Characters: Jud Fry, Curly McLain
Summary: If Curly didn’t want to be friends, Jud reckoned they was just going to have to be enemies. And no enemy of his was going to take the farm or Laurey without a fight.
Yup. I wrote Jud/Curly backstory/angst/kinda hatesex from Jud's POV. Many thanks tolikeadeuce for going out of her way to beta on this one, despite having only a passing familiarity with the canon. Confession time: I played Laurey in my high school production of Oklahoma my senior year. Jud was played by the quarterback of the football team. Played the drums. Very dreamy. Curly was this awkward kid with bad skin who kept forgetting the words to his songs. To the point where I told him if he didn't learn the damn words, I going to sing "Surry With the Fringe on Top" as a solo. (yeah i was a bit of a diva at 18...) I think this fic might have helped me work out some latent issues I was having.

Summary: AU: On her first Longest Night as a pupil of Anafiel Delaunay, Phèdre meets his consort, Melisande Shahrizai.
So this was the AU story I wrote, my first AU ever in any fandom. It's based on the vision Phèdre has toward the end of Avatar where she sees all the different paths her life could have taken, bound up with Melisande in every single one of them. And so the request was for Phedre, Delaunay and Alcuin family time plus Melisande and/or Barquiel. So, I served up the Delaunay family with a slight twist. Many thanks to aptasi for last minute beta for this one! I've had ideas and scenes for this one for awhile (little Phedre in a red dress pressing her nose up against the glass while she waits for foster mom! Melisande to arrive) but hearing that someone else might want that story too gave me the impetus to write it. Several people commented that they would like to see more of this AU; I do have a few other ideas, it will depend on how much time I have to write this year. My favorite detail is Delaunay ordering the servants to make ready the pleasure chamber for his lady's arrival- Melisande's coming home, no dusty whipping crosses or unpolished chains!

Yentl was one of those formative movies for me. It probably made me gay. Or I wanted to watch it because I was gay. One of those chicken and egg things. I don't think I realized at 13 how amazingly sexy the character of Hadass is, I was too caught up in Yentl's more obvious gender norm breaking. I also was sad Yentl didn't end up with Avigdor...now I wish of course she had kept up her masquerade with Hadass and they had moved to the Lower East Side and become lesbian rabbis or something. So here is a ficlet that could be read as either AU or a missing scene where Hadass reveals she a) knows her "husband's" secret and b) wants him/her anyway.

Carmen Sandiego was my first fandom. I've been active off and on since I was 14. When I came back to writing fic after a long hiatus, this was the story I wrote. It's a character study, short and very precise. I still think it's one of the best things I've ever written. I love trickster figures, mentorship-apprentice stories, affection between antagonists and protagonists and sympathetic villains. This fandom has it all.

I don't know if this is one of my best, but it might be my favorite. The fic of my id and the first Kushiel and first explicit story I ever wrote. It was a long time coming. Basically, this is what I wanted to happen between Phedre and Melisande at the end of Phedre's trilogy. For them to meet again as lovers and equals. For it to be unclear who holds the upper hand and who yields.

This is the fic I wrote last year for Yuletide, my first Yuletide. Rec'd because I really loved writing in Russell's tart first person POV. I actually really like writing first person in general- I've come to understand that a lot of people don't enjoy reading it. But many of the fandoms I like are first person and I try to capture the spirit of that when I write. I like Sherlock and Russell. I like that they're weird and kind of queer. Most of all I like that they are a marriage of equals and their offbeat like March-December romance works for them. Plus Mary Russell shares my birthday, which is coincidentally today, Jan 2!
