Rampant S3 Downton Abbey Speculation
Sep. 13th, 2012 12:55 pmIt's that time of year again- the time when I illegally stream Downton Abbey off the internetz so I can be months ahead of the losers less fannishly obsessed Americans who will patiently wait for PBS to air the series in January. I taught so many people how to stream Downtown last year, it's probably the thing I am most likely to go to jail for. I can never run for public office now. Let the crazy wild speculation begin! Here are my predictions for season 3 based on trailers, interviews, and just general spidey senses about what Julian Fellowes thinks makes for good television.
1) The Crawley's will be in danger of loosing Downton, until Lady Edith saves the day by marrying the Rich Old Dude
Trailers have hinted at money troubles for the estate, we saw the return of Sir Anthony Stralland at the end of s2. It would add an interesting dynamic- and a return to the epic sisterly bitchfest of s1- if Edith somehow became the estate's salvation. Although, honestly, I prefer the sisterly dynamic of s2.
2) The new footman is not O'Brien's "nephew," he's her secret son
Yes this plot was done before in Gosford Park, but sue me, Fellowes strikes me as a man of limited imagination. It would actually add some more depth to O'Brien's character and provide a reason for all that bitterness (aside from you know, just the bitterness most of us would feel if we were at the bottom of a hierarchical class system) if she had been "ruined" by a former employer and/or forced to give up her child to support herself and her family.
3) Bates will be acquitted and released, but then he will confess to Anna that he really did murder his wife.
Bates bores me to tears. The post-coital scene alone is a crime against humanity- pasty, shirtless Brendan Coyle is something I very much could have done without. I may have been one of the only people rooting for him to hang last year, simply because it opened up the possibility that Anna might get fixed up with someone better looking and more interesting. But lord knows Fellowes will punish me by continuing to have Bates on the damn show. And this kind of reveal is just the sort of soapy twist he seems to love.
4) Daisy will play matchmaker between Mrs. Pattemore and William's dad.
They become one happy family and live dysfunctionally ever after- THE END
I was pretty sure before that Branson was going to bite it during "the troubles" over in Ireland, but now am less confident. One of my friends thinks they might kill off Matthew just because Dan Stevens has been making noises about leaving the show and doing the Hollywood thing. (Dan, I just gotta say- exhibit A, Christopher Eccleston. You say you want to do high drama, and then you end up cast in GI Joe.) Insert your own predictions here- the prize at the end of the season is a sense of smug superiority. ;)
