Still catching up on Fandom Snowflake. I really should be writing right now but...nah...gonna procrastinate a little.

Day 12- An Intro to Fandom/Canon Post

I was going to skip this one, as I really am not good about thinking about introductory materials to a fandom. Intro materials to a US History survey, yes. But then I thought of these lovely photosets about the women of The Hour. Right now it's just Marnie and Lix, but doesn't the sight of Lix being tough and smoking and drinking, looking like Katharine Hepburn, make you want to watch this show?  And love Marnie, too, and how she's just so much more than a society housewife. I'm not sure I buy Oona Chaplin as some kind of English Rose...she's too much of "Talisa" from Volantis for me...but she's lovely in this.

Day 13- Recs, please!

I recently completed a rewatch of s3-4 of Battlestar Galactica and it's got me in the mood to read some good gen/worldbuilding fic. Send me recs for something that explores the origins of the Cylons and the Final Five, the religion and mythology, and/or Starbuck's death and rebirth as a angel. I was never entirely satisfied with how these questions were answered in canon, and hoping fic can provide some closure.

Ha, so I bought Lego Pirates of the Caribbean video game the other day. It's very cute and a lot of fun- the best part is Lego Jack Sparrow drunkenly running around in a perfect imitation of Johnny Depp. It's made me rediscover my love of this fandom, especially the Sparrington pairing. (some cute Sparrington moments in the video game, incidentally. i wonder if the creators knew...) I was never a rabid fan and I often find big fandoms difficult to navigate, so i'd definitely appreciate some good Sparrington recs. I like the ones where James is all stuffy and proper and the perfect gentleman and Jack seduces him. I'd love to read some fix-it fic for the last movie, too.

Canon Recs- I'm always on the lookout for a new tv or book series. Preferably ones with prominent and complex female characters- bonus points if they also have moral ambiguity. I tend to read historical fantasy, historical fiction, and mysteries but am open to other genres, too.  Also fantasy or genre novels that feature LGBT characters and relationships- I prefer the ladies, but I will read about the mens, too. :)

I am going to attempt canon recs, though I'm not sure anything I mention will appeal to you! Lately I've been devouring Connie Willis's Oxford Time Travel series, and it is all about time-traveling historians going to the past, which is such a brilliant concept, but also there are female characters front and center and that is wonderful to me. CW's Beauty and the Beast is—well, it's a CW show, but the ladies are so pretty and compelling and absolutely the show's priority, I think, so far. And you have fantasy/sci-fi and mystery there, though it's a contemporary. Also a contemporary: Pretty Little Liars, the TV show. I mean, it's another one of those things where you might not like it if you have high standards for quality, but it is a delightful show and chock full of complex, layered women who have complex, layered relationships with each other. And there sure is mystery in it. ;)

And have you read Malinda Lo's Ash? It's historical fantasy and a lovely lesbian retelling of Cinderella. I enjoyed it quite a lot. And The Montmaray Journals! Such a fantastic series, though I'm sure you've at least heard of it. Historical fiction, canon LGBT guys, and lots of absolutely wonderful ladies.
